Meet Master Gardener Jyothika Valluru
Jyothika Valluru, UC Certified Horticulturist and Master Gardener
University of California Agriculture and Natural Resources (ANR)
As a passionate Master Gardener, I find magic in coaxing life from the soil, witnessing the vibrant dance of pollinators, and sharing the bounty of my harvest with friends and family. My gardening journey began at the age of 10 when I was fascinated by the beautiful flowers and lush green veggies sold by vendors. I wanted to grow my own vegetables and continuously sought ways to enhance my gardening skills.
After moving to the USA couple of decades ago, I longed to grow Indian vegetables, especially since the nearest Indian store was about 25 miles away during our time in Upstate NY. Thus, my new gardening journey started with growing greens in a few containers. I composted my kitchen waste and continued to learn the right techniques. Over the summer months, I grew a variety of vegetables and learned how to preserve food properly to enjoy my garden produce all year long.
Moving to California elevated my gardening journey to the next level when I was accepted into the Master Gardener program. Upon completion, I began assisting numerous gardeners and farmers, specializing in protocols related to organic and natural farming, chemical-free pest control, formulating organic fertilizers, compost teas, permaculture, and sustainable practices.
Becoming a Master Gardener deepened my knowledge and connection with the natural world. I am particularly drawn to the beauty and challenges of reviving struggling plants and helping them thrive, whether they are growing in containers, raised beds, or native soils.
In addition to presenting at various University classes in California, I give numerous talks at the Dublin Community Garden and mentor and assist many gardeners in improving their skills. I believe gardening is a powerful tool for fostering healthy eating habits and supporting the consumption of local foods. Beyond my own garden, I am dedicated to sharing my knowledge. When not digging in the dirt, you can find me planning activities in my Garden club, organizing gardening events, coordinating plant swaps, and participating in Farmer’s markets and local nurseries.
Currently, I am pursuing the UC Master Food Preserver’s program to learn science-based food preserving techniques and preserve homegrown food properly. Once I graduate from the program I look forward to helping everyone preserve food the right way based on Science!
I educate gardeners on soil, composting, fertilization, plant care, propagation, irrigation and landscaping techniques.
I am thrilled to work with Sai Gardens Consulting Services in providing Consulting Services and class room sessions to help fellow gardeners follow their passion. We intend offering wide range of programs through this platform. Stay tuned and Happy Gardening!
